Everything You Need to Know About Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Denver

Everything You Need to Know About Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Denver
Every type of flooring will eventually begin to show signs of wear and tear, including hardwood. But unlike other flooring materials, hardwood can return to its original state if it is refinished. Here’s everything you need to know about hardwood refinishing in Denver:

What is Refinishing?

Refinishing is the process of taking the finish off of your hardwood floors and replacing it with a new finish. Most scratches and signs of damage are on the finish of your floors, not the actual wood. Therefore, refinishing will allow you to remove the scratches and other damage and make your floors look brand new again.

There are two steps to refinishing hardwood floors. The first step is using a drum sander machine on your floors. The sanding machine will remove the finish from your floors so you can move onto the next step, which is applying a new finish once you have reached bare wood.

In some cases, a buffing machine may be enough to remove the scratches from your finish so you don’t have to use the sander and reapply the finish. Talk to a hardwood flooring professional to determine if you will be able to restore your floors with just a buffing machine, or if they need to be completely sanded down and refinished.

When to Refinish

Homeowners don’t have to wait a certain length of time before they can refinish their wood. Some homeowners may need to refinish their wood sooner than others, depending on foot traffic and a number of other factors. Basically, if you see that your wood is beginning to look beat up, it may be time to refinish your floors.

It’s estimated that hardwood flooring can withstand between 10 to 12 refinishing jobs in its lifetime. However, not all engineered hardwood flooring can withstand the refinishing process. Refer to the manufacturer's product guide for your type of flooring.  Here’s what you need to know about hardwood floor refinishing.

DIY vs. Professionals

Many homeowners want to tackle this project on their own to save money, but this is probably not a good idea. If you have never refinished a floor, it is very likely that you will make a mistake the first time. Every mistake that you make while refinishing the floors in your home will be noticeable, so you may end up spending more on repairs than you would have spent if you called in a professional to handle the job in the first place.

Plus, refinishing kicks up a lot of dust and debris in your home, which could irritate your respiratory system if you don’t have the proper safety gear. For this reason alone, it’s important that you work with a professional instead of trying to do this project on your own.

How to Care For Hardwood Flooring in Denver

How to Care For Hardwood Flooring in Denver
Do you love the way hardwood flooring in Denver looks? If you’re considering installing this type of flooring in your home, it’s important that you understand how to care for it so you can preserve its beauty for years after the installation. Protect and extend the life of your hardwood flooring by following these simple tips:

Prevent damage.

There are certain things that you should avoid if you have hardwood floors in your home. For example, don’t walk across the floor in high-heeled shoes because the spike of the heel could scratch the finish of your new floors. Pets’ claws can also scratch through this finish, so make sure your pets are either kept out of the room or properly groomed so their nails are not an issue. It’s also wise to ask visitors to remove their shoes before coming inside your home and walking on your floors. The bottoms of their shoes may have dirt and debris that could scratch your floor as they walk across it.

Sweep regularly.

To prevent dust, dirt, and other debris from scratching the finish of your hardwood floors, get in the habit of sweeping on a regular basis. Besides preventing damage, sweeping can also keep your hardwood looking clean and beautiful.

Don’t use liquids on the hardwood.

When a floor is dirty, you may instinctively reach for a mop and a bucket, but don’t do this if you have hardwood floors. Hardwood is not very resistant to water, so you should never mop the floors with water, even if the mop is only damp. Doing so can cause a great deal of damage and lead to costly repairs.

Protect your floors from the furniture.

If you have to move furniture out of a room with hardwood flooring, don’t drag it across the floor. Dragging it can scratch the surface of your hardwood floors, so this should be avoided at all costs. You will also need to protect your floor from the furniture that sits on top of it. Do this by placing a protective pad in between the furniture legs and your hardwood floor. Don’t wait to see damage before you do this—this should be done immediately after the hardwood floors are put in.

Adjust the temperature.

Ideally, wood should be kept in a room that is between 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a 30 to 50% humidity level. Try to keep your home within these ranges to protect your hardwood floors. If hardwood is kept at a temperature or humidity level outside of these ranges for a long time, it may start to buckle. Learn more about how to care for hardwood floors.

How To Choose Optimal Carpeting for Your Denver Home

May 10, 2017

How To Choose Optimal Carpeting for Your Denver Home
Does your home need a refresh? Carpet is a classic choice that is budget-friendly, versatile, and can also make some rooms feel more cozy. But, choosing the right carpeting for your home here in Denver can be a bit of a challenge since there are so many different options. Before you make a decision, make sure you take these things into consideration:

Foot Traffic

How often will people be walking over your new carpet? If you’re putting it in a room that is frequently used, you will need a more durable type of carpet, such as solid cut pile. However, if you’re putting the carpet in a room that is not used very often, you can basically choose any type of carpeting without worrying about how it will hold up over time.

Pets

Do you have pets in your home? A pet’s claws can easily get caught on certain types of carpeting, especially cut and loop styles. If their claws get caught, they could end up hurting themselves, damaging your new carpet, or both. For these reasons, it’s best to choose a flat style of carpeting to ensure your investment lasts as long as it should.

Comfort

Some homeowners don’t pay much attention to how carpet feels underneath their feet, while others prioritize the softness of a carpet over everything else. If you’re in the latter group, you may want to choose something a bit thicker, such as shag carpeting. Shag carpet is known for its plush softness, so walking across your floors will feel like lush and comforting.

If you don’t like the look of shag carpeting, talk to Design Craft Blinds & Floors about adding a layer of padding underneath the carpet style of your choice. This will make the carpet a bit softer so you can achieve the look and comfort level you desire.

Look

Do you want solid colored flooring or would you prefer something in a pattern? Although carpet is often seen in solid colors, there are patterned options available as well. For example, if you choose modular carpet tiles, you can pick from countless colors, textures and patterns to suit your needs. Prints or patterned carpet may look more like an area rug when installed in a room, which can add character to your home.

Color

No matter how careful you are, just remember the lighter the color of carpet you choose, the higher the maintenance. The warmer the color of the carpet, the less maintanence. In those areas where you plan on gathering wtih friends and family, it would be best to go with a warmer/darker color. This will help conceal spots and signs of wear and tear. Shutters

Trends in window treatments come and go, but one that will stand the test of time is the use of shutters. Although many people tend to think shutters are only used on the outside of the home, they are actually used as an indoor window treatment as well. Not only are shutters timeless, but they are also one of the most durable types of window treatments. Shutters come in several styles including wood, composite and vinyl. Each style has pros and cons. For example wooden shutters are typically the most expensive however, you pay a premium for a quality product. On the other hand, vinyl shutters are the most cost-effective, but they can have structural issues. Composite shutters which are made of engineered wood are an affordable alternative to the pricey wooden shutter.

Honeycomb Shades

Are you interested in making your home more energy efficient? If so, you may want to consider installing honeycomb shades, which are named after their honeycomb structure. These shades have two layers, which means that heat and light have to get through multiple layers of fabric before reaching the interior. Honeycomb shades, also know as cellular shades, offer any home a modern flair with exceptional performance.

Wood Blinds

Wood or faux wood blinds are the perfect addition to homes that have a rustic, earthy feel. Adding wood blinds to your windows instantly makes the room feel warmer and more inviting. These blinds are customizable, which means you can stain the wood to complement the rest of your furniture and features in your home.

There’s no question that wood blinds are stunning, but they are not very resistant to moisture. If you want the look of wood blinds, but don’t want to worry about damaging your window treatments if they get wet, choose a faux wood instead. Faux wood blinds can be customized to look just like real wood blinds, but they are much more durable and easy to clean.

The Benefits of Using Denver Blinds

April 12, 2017

The Benefits of Using Denver Blinds
Are you trying to decide what type of window treatments you want in your home? Many homeowners choose to use Denver blinds or shades in their home, and it’s not hard to see why. Here are some of the many benefits of using blinds and shades in your home:

Versatile Lighting

Many window treatments only give you two options: let all of the natural light in or let none of it in. But, blinds give you more than just these two options. If you want more light, simply adjust your blinds to let a little bit more natural light into the room. Because blinds are adjustable, you can control how much light you want in your room, which is a benefit that many other window treatments do not offer.

Different Styles

You never have to worry about how your new blinds will look with the rest of your décor. Why? Blinds come in so many different styles and colors that it will be easy to find a design that is perfect for your home. For example, wood blinds can be stained, finished, and painted to match any room in your house.

Blinds come in a variety of different materials, too. Besides wood, you can also find blinds made out of vinyl, faux wood, and even fabric. Having these options allows you to customize your window treatments even further to ensure they complement the rest of the room.

Low Cost

The price of blinds will vary depending on the size of your windows and the materials you have selected, but in general, blinds are less expensive than other window treatments. If you’re remodeling or redecorating your home on a tight budget, consider using blinds for window treatments.

Use Shades for Privacy

Just as you can control the amount of light that comes into your room with blinds, you can also control the amount of privacy you have with shades. If you want as much privacy as possible, it’s recommended that you choose top-down shades in contrast to blinds, which lower from the top instead of rising from the bottom. This allows you to let natural light into your home without exposing yourself to everyone outside.

Low Maintenance

If you have little kids or pets in your home, you know the importance of choosing low maintenance window treatments. Luckily, blinds are about as low maintenance as they come. Unlike curtains, you never have to remove blinds from your windows in order to clean them properly. Dust may begin to build up on blinds over time, but all you have to do is grab a dry dust mop or a damp cloth and wipe the blinds down to remove the dust and debris. Learn how to clean blinds.
